Kaidos Vailinn is a man trying hard to overcome his past. But being a Wanderer-born thief does not leave him many options in life. So when a stranger comes bearing a contract to kidnap a prostitute and deliver “her” overseas, he’s hard-pressed to find a reason to turn it down.

Veyl is the highest paid “companion” at the Silver Tree Manor, an upscale brothel in the village of Aaullsworthe. At the tender age of twenty, he is steeped in ennui and still reeling from a broken heart. When he is called to a room at the local inn, he is charmed by the handsome dark-skinned man who has paid for his services. However things get ugly once Kaidos realizes it's not a woman that he's brought to his bed.

What begins as a journey full of discord slowly evolves into love, but the ruthless ambition of a dying tyrant threatens to separate Kaidos and Veyl forever. Kaidos must convince a group of unlikely allies and an army to help him rescue the man whose love is worth more to him than a king’s ransom.

I really enjoyed and loved this wonderful book it was written so lovely. I love all of the books I have read so far from this author. I have read Worthy and Where Willows Won't Grow these books are beautifully written also. I love the relationship between Veyl and Kaidos and relationship between Crow and Barlan. I love everything about this book it was very emotional I cried it was sad at times, I laugh at the comedy, I seat on the edge of the seat at the action, and couldn't wait to see what happen next with all the twists and turns. At the end of this book seemed like there could be another book I would not mind that as long as it was as good as this one. I hope if there is another book the same characters and then some in that book. I will recommend this book to everybody I know and to all my friends too. 👏

A King Ransom edition by Lia Black Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Without giving anything away, the characters are charming, funny and likable in their flawed, stubborn humanity. The two main characters have great chemistry. Provocative, explicit sex scenes. And the last third of the book I was either gasping, cheering them on, or crying my eyes out. I highly recommend if you like m/m relationships with a compelling, twisty plot.
For the most part this was a book worth reading... There was things in the story that I wished the author had explained better and then there were parts that, IMO could have been left out, like a couple of the sex scheme they just seem unnecessary/ unbelievable to the story. This story appeared
long but it was not a waste of my money and the best part of it is there's no cliffhanger! That alone earned this book an extra star!
It is hard to review this book. It was good, the story original and peopled with very interesting characters, however it felt much too long. Possibly because at about the half-way mark the author atarted introducing new characters and it almost felt like a deviation from the original story arc. It was a good story but the pacing could use work- as if the first half needed to be more concise OR it needed to be more than one book.
Ok I liked this book but I guess I wanted more... I want more of Finn and the Mage... What happened with the elf and the bear... Just not enough answers for me.. The story felt incomplete for that to be the end... I wish the author would write another book from this world to learn more of these characters... Oh well it was a good adventure none the less...
This book is worth of much better cover art for sure! I resisted reading it only because of the cover and low price, but from the first page I got sucked in completely. Wonderful characters, really good mix of romance, hot sex scenes, adventures, suffering and even magic. Nice main characters, although somehow a bit cliché, good amount of support characters (the mage is a real gem!) with enough story to back them up. Highly recommended!
I had high hopes for this book, I really did. When I first read the synopsis, I was immediately intrigued -- upon reading it, however, I was quickly disappointed.

It started out nice enough, but I was soon to find that every romantic trope imaginable would soon be thrust upon me as a reader. If you are looking for a nice, slow burn...this book is not for you. It's a little frightening how fast the characters fall for each other, given that one is a somewhat proclaimed homophobe and the other was brutally kidnapped by the proclaimed homophobe. I tried to write it off as Stockholm's Syndrome, but Veyl's character just didn't match up with one who was suffering from that particular mental ailment. There are several typos that you can chalk up to poor editing. The "plot twists" are just so out there that I found myself less surprised at what was happening and more questioning "why is this happening, this came out of nowhere and not in a good way." Everything started getting very convoluted and confusing, character motives were starting to blur, and even the sex scenes were starting to come out of nowhere -- granted, the sex scenes were by far the best part of this story, very detailed.

If given the option to read or skip, I would skip.
This novel began well and was quite good until around 55%. At that point it became very dreary, depressing and convoluted. It's very cheaply priced so I can't complain too much but what could have been an epic, romantic and sexy read unraveled into a messy disappointment.
